Set up hörbert as a podcast player with Butterfly 2 – here’s how to do it in three minutes

In this blog post, we’ll explain how to set up hörbert as a podcast player, assign podcasts to the coloured buttons, and how hörbert can automatically download new episodes at a time of your choosing.

Preparation

Step 1 in Browser Set Mode: WLAN settings

Open the WiFi menu item in the Browser Set Mode.

Activate WiFi
Enter the Wi-Fi name and password for your home 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
Click on ‘Save and test’.
Open ‘Advanced settings’ at the bottom of the same window.
Select a time under ‘Connect to Wi-Fi and check for podcast updates’.
Select your time zone.
Go to the main menu and click on PLAYLISTS.

Step 2 in Browser Set Mode: Add podcast to playlist

Select PLAYLISTS from the main menu and then select the colourful hörbert button on which you want to save a podcast:

The playlist content window will open.
Above the title overview, there are buttons for adding radio stations, files and podcasts. Click on the yellow ‘+Podcast’ button.

Enter a keyword in the search bar, e.g. ‘Die Maus zum Hören’ (The Mouse to Listen To), and wait for the search results to appear.
Then click once on the correct search result.
The corresponding podcast will be inserted at the top of the ‘Podcast URL’ line:

In the field below, you can set the number of episodes you want to download later.
Click on the blue ‘Save’ button. The podcast’s control file will now be added to the playlist.

Downloading podcast episodes

You can now use the Download button in the Control File (the icon with the downward-pointing arrow) to download all selected episodes. Alternatively, you can download individual episodes by clicking the Download button next to each episode listed under the main Control File. Any remaining episodes will then be downloaded automatically by hörbert at the next scheduled download time, provided that hörbert is switched off and the configured Wi-Fi network is available.

For the initial setup, we recommend downloading only a single episode, as downloading via Wi-Fi in Browser Set Mode may take several minutes. Alternatively, you can simply set up the Control File and let hörbert automatically download the episodes at the next scheduled download time, so you do not need to wait.
Within the Control File, individual episodes can be protected by ticking the checkbox next to “Keep”. This ensures that hörbert will not overwrite these episodes when downloading new content. If the maximum number of episodes for a podcast has already been reached, hörbert will automatically delete the oldest episodes to make room for new ones.
Once the download has completed successfully, click the gray “Save & Close” button in the upper-right corner of the window to save your Playlist.

hörbert will now restart. Select the playlist with the podcast and click through to the desired episode, unless you have already added it to the top of the playlist.
