For years, Hörbert has been one of the most unusual audio products in its category. Whilst many devices rely on plastic casings and displays, Hörbert is based on a robust wooden body, large coloured buttons and an intuitive operating system. The device is developed in southern Germany and manufactured in the Ore Mountains, combining a durable, robust design with modern audio technology.
Materials and User Interface
The player is made from solid wood and plywood, finished with a sweat- and saliva-resistant coating. The controls are firmly attached to the casing and comply with current safety standards. Hörbert can be used as an MP3 player, internet radio, podcast player, Bluetooth streaming speaker or recording device. Content can be loaded in the traditional way via a memory card or via Wi-Fi. Users can add files from a wide range of sources without being tied to cloud services or subscription models.
Product variants and target groups
Hörbert is available in variants for children, older people, care settings and people with disabilities. The version developed specifically for care settings features:
- three large, high-contrast buttons for easy operation
- a USB-C power port with battery charging function
- connectivity options for external large-button controls and environmental control systems.
These features ensure a hassle-free listening experience, even for people with impaired vision, dementia or reduced fine motor skills. In addition, audio content is available that is specifically tailored to stimulate and aid orientation in the context of dementia care.
Firmware and features
With the latest ‘Butterfly2’ firmware, Hörbert offers features such as automatic podcast updates, internet radio playback via Wi-Fi, and configuration directly via smartphone or tablet – without the need for an additional app. The firmware will be available free of charge for all devices from October 2021. Older devices can be retrofitted with new electronics.
Handcrafted Production and Sustainability
Every Hörbert device is manufactured in Germany using a combination of industrial production and handcrafting. The materials, workmanship and safety standards ensure a long service life and are harmless to health.
