Internet radio with hörbert

Internet-Radio hörbert

Endless content – and completely free? Your hörbert can do that! Via internet radio, hörbert streams radio stations from all over the world in good sound quality. An internet radio can be both the term for a device as well as the term for streaming radio stations. An internet connection or home WiFi is indeed essential for receiving web radio. With hörbert’s recording function, you can also record the content on the memory card and later listen to it as often as you like even without internet access.

We’ve specially created an advert-free and free web radio station for children and their adults: Our Wolkenradio – the children’s and family radio station on the internet.
Advert-free – violence-free – good entertainment for the whole family. Have a listen straight away at https://wolkenradio.net

Here you can find further information about Wolkenradio.

How does it work exactly?

Internet radio stations have a so-called stream address, which looks quite similar to the address of websites.

Carry out a firmware update to the latest Butterfly firmware for your hörbert straight away. Then you can also release the desired playlists on the memory card for recordings without a computer or hörbert software in the so-called Browser Set Mode, a simple web interface for hörbert, save your home Wi-Fi data (Wi-Fi name and password) and naturally also activate all necessary special functions like Bluetooth/pairing or WiFi for web radio or even the microphone for voice recordings. By the way: In Browser Set Mode there’s a simple keyword search for suitable web radio stations for hörbert. This makes it very easy to store one or more streaming URLs for a hörbert playlist. Have a look at our video on starting Browser Set Mode straight away. You can find that here:
VIDEO Browser Set Mode

If your hörbert (model without toggle switch) hasn’t yet experienced an update to the Butterfly firmware version, you can still set it up so that it can make Bluetooth or internet and voice recordings. For this you’ll then need a computer with SD card reader and the free hörbert software. The SET template below shows you which buttons you need to press in SET mode to activate special functions like Bluetooth/pairing and WiFi.

You can then easily insert stream addresses from web radio stations into playlists as text lines with the hörbert software. They then behave almost like a completely normal song in the playlist, only the internet radio naturally just plays on if you don’t switch the playlist forward and not just for one track. You can zap through files and internet radio stations with the playlist buttons as usual. Storing multiple internet radio stations per playlist is also possible.

Recording the radio programmes is very easy:
Hold down the black button and then briefly press the grey button, and release both – the recording starts straight away. You end and save the recording again with the black button, but the internet radio just carries on playing. The recordings end up at the end of the playlist, one after another.

And when there’s no Wi-Fi available? Then when browsing through the playlist you’ll recognise from several repeated beeping sounds that hörbert is looking for an internet radio station but can’t find one. You can then simply zap on or wait until hörbert notices that it has no Wi-Fi or something’s wrong with the radio stream. You can programme up to 5 Wi-Fi networks, it tries them all out.

If there are still any uncertainties or questions about the topic of internet radio with hörbert, we have a separate FAQ page where all important questions are answered. You can get to the FAQ here.

A bit of preparation is necessary so that hörbert can access the internet via your Wi-Fi:

For hörbert to function as an internet radio, with a hörbert without Butterfly firmware three steps must first take place:

Step 1:
Activate WiFi via SET mode:
– Switch hörbert on.
– Press the SET mode button inside.
– Now check whether WiFi is already activated on your hörbert by briefly pressing the orange button at the front. If hörbert makes one high signal tone, WiFi is active. If it makes two deeper signal tones, WiFi is switched off, then press again so that a single, high signal tone sounds.
Then press the SET mode button inside again to save.

Step 2:
Editing the memory card with the hörbert software:

Store Wi-Fi access data on the memory card. For this you need the new hörbert software from version 3.x.x onwards
You can find the latest hörbert software HERE for download.

Start the hörbert software, select your new hörbert model and read in the memory card.

Now in the software menu under Extras via “Configure WiFi connections” you can store the name and password of your home Wi-Fi. Note: It must be a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
The SSID – that’s the Wi-Fi name – mustn’t contain any spaces.
The password may contain upper and lower case letters, as well as numbers and the following special characters: “.” / “-” / “_”

Store internet radio URL(s)

Now click on one of the coloured buttons for which you want to store one or more internet radio streams. Via the plus sign next to the word “URL” you can now store a streaming URL. Simply copy the streaming address and insert it here. You can find examples of URLs below in this blog post.

If you also want to record internet radio:

Then in the content window for the playlist at the bottom of the window you can specify whether you also want to allow recordings on this button. Click in the box “Allow internet radio recordings here”.

Eject the memory card and insert it into hörbert.

Step 3:
Read in Wi-Fi data.
Switch hörbert on.
Press the SET mode button inside again.
Now press the orange button for a very long time. And for so long that after about 10 seconds you hear a signal tone that confirms that the WiFi data has been read into hörbert.

Now press the SET mode button inside again to save.

Now hörbert is ready to play internet radio stations at the touch of a button.

Sender & Playlists for children - our selection for internet radio

The amount of radio stations on the internet is almost unlimited. So it’s not always easy to find stations with content for children. Here we help you with a few tips that can be brilliantly integrated via the built-in web radio.

Here are examples of working URLs:

Wolkenradio:
http://de.wolkenradio.net/stream128

Mausradio:
https://wdr-diemaus-live.icecastssl.wdr.de/wdr/diemaus/live/mp3/128/stream.mp3

http://stream.laut.fm/kinderlieder-123

http://stream.laut.fm/1000christmashits

advert-free: http://stream.laut.fm/kinderland

Here’s another podcast episode from die Maus:

Please copy this URL without the quotation marks: “https://wdrmedien-a.akamaihd.net/medp/podcast/weltweit/fsk0/303/3033150/diemauszumhoeren_2023-12-06_magisch_diemaus.mp3″

hörbert can’t (yet) fetch live podcasts. But you can store individual podcast episodes as URLs.

By the way: You can also enter the stream URLs in your browser. If you’ve got the right stream address, you’ll see an almost empty page with a play button, and the radio starts playing straight away. You simply use the same URL (stream address) as the internet radio URL when storing the URL on a hörbert playlist via the hörbert software.

Have fun trying out the different stations.
