This is how you perform a firmware update for your hörbert

How to perform a firmware update?
Here we show you the steps that will make your hörbert an even better hörbert.

Describing the firmware update briefly

  1. Turn off hörbert, remove the memory card and plug it into your computer
  2. Copy the firmware to your memory card – (even without hörbert software: see below *)
  3. Remove one battery from hörbert
  4. Insert the prepared memory card into hörbert
  5. Press and hold the SET button
  6. Reinsert the battery, while holding the SET button
  7. Continue to hold the SET button for another 20-30 seconds, until a confirmation tone is heard
  8. Now you can release the SET button.

Done! After a short break of about 10 seconds, you can turn on your hörbert again.

Detailed description of a firmware update

First, the hörbert Software for Windows, Mac, and Linux from version 3.1.1 onwards helps you to copy the latest firmware file to the memory card.

  • Insert the memory card into your computer and select it in the hörbert software
  • Click on Tools -> Download firmware for hörbert in the menu
  • Once everything is done, safely eject the memory card with the hörbert software before removing it from the computer.

Now it’s hörbert’s turn:

  • Remove one battery so that hörbert has no power.
  • Insert the memory card back into hörbert.
  • Press the SET button with one finger while hörbert still has no power.
  • With the other hand, press the battery back into its holder.
  • Keep your finger on the SET button the whole time.
  • Now wait about 20-30 seconds until you hear a confirmation tone. The confirmation tone sounds the same as when turning on a hörbert.

Done! That was a success, and you can turn on hörbert again after another 10 seconds and use it normally.


In case of an error:
Do you hear a deep error tone during the update? Then it’s better to start all over again and reload the firmware onto the memory card. Also, try using a different memory card.

So you check whether the firmware update was successful

Does the positive acknowledgment tone sound after 3 to 5 seconds already, and does the green LED flash very quickly for 2 seconds?
Then the firmware version that is on the memory card is already running on hörbert: Everything is fine!

*) It is also possible without hörbert software for Windows, Mac, and Linux:

  • Download the file hoerbert_firmware.bin here: Firmware Download
  • Do not attempt to unpack it, even if your computer offers you to do so.
  • Simply move this file to the root directory of your memory card.
    Important: The file must be named exactly hoerbert_firmware.bin on the memory card, otherwise hörbert will not recognize it.
  • Then follow the steps described above with hörbert.
